Science is an organized social activity by which people come to understand the universe. Science is organized according to the idea of, "whatever works," but the organizing themes of science are dignified by referring to them as the scientific method.
As a human social activity, the contents of science are determined by convention. If a significant number of scientists agree that something is part of science, then it is a recognized part of the scientific enterprise. The fringes of science are cluttered with topics of study and speculation that fall outside of the scientific mainstream. Scientists apply the terms protoscience, pseudoscience and non-science to fringe disciplines.
